The Brief & Concept:
Originating from a design challenge to launch an online-exclusive vintage men’s denim line, the brief required a complete visual identity that seamlessly bridges the contrast of power and gentleness. The resulting concept, VELLUM, achieves this dual identity by pairing heavy, grounded structural lines with soft, organic crest geometry referencing both the natural drape of worn-in selvedge denim and the delicate, archival texture of aged parchment.
The Execution
Typography: A custom, condensed sans-serif logotype with rounded inner terminals anchors the primary identity. The letterforms feature interlocking details that give the mark a connected, high-fashion feel while maintaining clear visibility across physical hardware and digital platforms.
Color Strategy: The brand utilizes a refined, heritage-inspired palette. Deep rust red and raw charcoal establish structural grounding and contrast, while warm parchment cream softens the presentation to evoke the archival feel of vintage paper and worn selvedge denim.
Deliverables: Custom brand mark suite, debossed leather waist patches, layered garment hangtags, and digital e-commerce visual guidelines.
Role & Tools
Concept development, visual identity system, typography design, and physical product mockups were engineered using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
The Design Structure
Identity System: The core design relies on a crest inspired by vintage denim pocket construction and traditional parchment seals. The mark was constructed with solid, high contrast lockups so it can seamlessly translate across debossed leather, woven tags, and small-scale metal hardware.
Color Palette: Warm parchment cream forms the soft background base, while deep rust red and raw charcoal provide a high-contrast edge, giving the brand an authoritative yet inviting aesthetic across physical apparel and digital touchpoints.
Reflection
This project provided an opportunity to explore the visual duality of power and gentleness within a specialized fashion framework. Building out the VELLUM brand meant ensuring the identity could maintain a high-end designer feel across wildly different physical materials translating cleanly from a deeply debossed leather waist patch to delicate, layered paper hangtags without losing its structural authority.
